Open disregard: Armenia vs Azerbaijan

Based on today’s open info this conflict involves failed promises, warmongers’ interests, religious confrontation, zealous military support… No wonder these countries are suddenly got bigger weapons to fight for their territorial integrity. Both territorial states may even act as a buffer zone between big world powers – USA and Russia.

After rounds of ethnic tension and periodical flared violence, the relationship between two nations are muddled in deep misunderstanding, in timeless grievances – well shorty – in disregard.

How can it not caught my attention for its fickle case over one specific territory called Nagorno – Karabakh; It’s hard to predict the outcome(s)with every so often escalation forming even more problems to both states as well to their alliances. And before making your own view on this conflict ( if you would care ) its better to see and read about this conflict from both sides. Making up your mind from reading only one press? If so, um, teeth-closed smile – would be my reaction.

If you have a chance, do confront both states’ arguments, read/watch the news from their both alliances ; USA, UK, French press would more likely favour Armenia’s statements, whereas Russian or Turkish press would rather show in a good light an Azerbaijan’s view of the conflict. And it’s up to you to see the logic in between for this disregard to happen.

Well you can just stop reading here if this topic doesn’t seem interested to you for its complicated nature as further i would add some of the geographical factors, map related matters that are quite unpopular by many.

Shortly: Nagorno Karabakh is the mountainous region with outstanding beauty of its silvery brown greenish  landscape that reminds me of monstrous malachite waves that freeze in time (bit of novel narrative here). This region lies entirely within the Azerbaijan’s borders (regarding the world map), and have been recognised as a part of this country ( politiCALLY-wise). But here is the thing, the territory itself is controlled by ethnic Armenian, plus the surrounded area is under Armenian powers. Yeah, this brings itself the question – HOW COME?

Geopolitically this area is particularly important, that is why the conflict in Karabakh takes so much attention of the press. I don’t know where do you live at, but in Russia this case is widely known – constantly on the news whenever this conflict rings the bell – even tho its only like a 5 % of the Azerbaijan land (Azeri territory). But the rest of the territory, which is around it – twice as big as Karabakh – is under Armenian control, and governs itself. Yeah, Karabakh is that small to cause such a big trouble to all. Im concern, this situation wouldn’t be as big without its placement on the world map: Azerbaijani’s neighbourhood is full of big political and territorial players, – one of them my home-country – such as, Turkey (Azeri’s official ally), Iran (borders both, its exact stance remains unclear), and Russia (sells weapons to Azerbaijan and Armenia).

Protests in Armenia due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Demand PM’s resignation.

From 19th century (probably even earlier), passing their hard times after several Russo-Persian wars reaching he 20s century to pull more strings between those nations (1918-1920).

For decades Armenia was waiting for their chance(s) to take control over the area, and so that happen in 1988 when the Soviet Union (where I was born) slowly started falling apart to its final round in 1991.  I bet it was like a ‘Hooray’ moment for Armenia: Now they could finally try to take Karabakh without Russian’s consent. Indeed, what kind of consent could be given, when Russia was too busy loosing their bigger Soviet territories, setting new governmental orders, regaining trust from their own citizens, who lost all their savings in one night (I’ve been there , I’ve seen it, and this is another story to tell).

Not sure who could play as a peacemaker, or what should be done to deescalate the situation, and what comes next after this conflict? For the end of September (2023) the case between Armenia and Azerbaijan might have reached its 8 out of 10 tension/danger level: sporadic fighting but short-lived hostilities. According to authorities of one side (Azeri) Nagorno Karabakh as a self-proclaimed republic will no longer exist starting from 2024(from 28th Sep.2023).

Giving a blind guess –  Karabakh region will, perhaps permanently, remained fluid.

Well regardless this unsolved conflict in both countries there are plenty of areas to explore…while staying away from Karabakh at its peak war zone period.
