Alcohol culture

Gambei!(China), Badhai Ho or Cheers ! (India) Za[Na] Zdorovhyeah!(Russia)  Do dna!(Russia)  Cheers!(USA)   Sláinte! (Ireland) Cheerio!(UK)  Santé!(French)  ¡Salud!(Spanish)  Prost! (German) Broscht! (Swiss-Germ.)  GeonBae!(Korean)  Zzan!(Korean) Kanpai! (Japan),  Banzai! (Japan),  Saha!(Arabic) Saúde! (Portugal)  Egészségedre! (Hungary)  Chin-chin!… words to celebrate life.

Recently at the restaurant, by myself — usual case — in Russia, ordering a single liquor shot, the waiter’s face mimic got slightly skeptic, if thats the right words to say: eyes wide open, wrinkled brow, edgy smirk, like suddenly awkward moment slashed an air. Just for a moment, but short moments actually leave the most ‘stained’ impression to recall. And how joking-me this awkward drink-order was in Russia, overwhelmingly known for its “tough drinkers” culture. Shocking was the fact that I never get such reaction in the US or Germany or France. I would assume, in China – alone at the restaurant, asking for hard liquor to serve – I would witness more of this ‘you kidding!?’ face expression, but bet till they hear where I came from (mozer Russia). Good or bad, cultural drinking stereotype(s) comes along wherever you go: “All Russians drink vodka”, “Germans cant live without beer”, “Irish are expertzz in brewing”, “Turks easily sway on raki“, “Mexicans only drink tequila”, “Sake rocks Anime”, ”Americans are full of shh…ots”.

drinking stereotypes – easy to remember, hard to resist, and impossible to forget,

So if you are Russian, or Irish, or Mexican , or British, or German, or Korean,…no one in alcho market abroad would bother to ask you “why are you buying this or that, and why so many?”. Countries where folks mastering their own hootch/moonshine. Therefore, rumour has it all: your country’s reputation comes before you, and largely adds up to that first impression that we all trying to slick about.

Drinking prevail as a type of entertainment, fun, adulthood. Kind of an attribute that comes with parties, prestige events, and other entertainments and thus alcohol popularity is undeniable.  Alcohol itself brings additional ‘touch’ to the country where it was made; The liquor brand is like a country’s id and often is the only identity that lots of folks can think of, like about Russia(Vodka), Poland(Vodka), Mexico (Tequila), Czech Republic (Beer), Germany(Beer), Scotland(Whiskey), England(Gin), France (Wine), Italy (Wine),…talking about the type of a drink and then the brand. How many times I heard :”oh you are from Russia?! Yeah, Russian vodka!”. Too many times and don’t even remember if I ever heard no feedback about vodka. Well, not complaining, of course, —I take it as a compliment — at some point I even bragged about quality of vodka in Russia, without drinking much of it. Oh, how unconvincing and silly I must have sounded when I did so.

This doomed idea of being known for country’s alcohol type/brand and that it only heighten self image in the eyes of young adults, precisely, enter the circle of ‘prestige’ popular mates and easily bond with peers. Quite comic to think of that now, but that’s how it is when you just got into a new culture set and constantly been casually reminded —by simple cues— that your identity links to certain items for what you could be picked-up on and judged. Sassy, in most countries that I’ve lived at, the beer was the most popular [cultural] drink, and so with locals I never had to tongue-fight argue in this funky chat of ‘who’s drink is better’. I was more in a spot to judge fairy when it was about wine, beer, whisky, and other drinks, well expect vodka. Huh, realising why I was not so welcomed in Poland, Ukraine, Finland and other Baltic states, besides political conflicts. Apart from so-called vodka belt countries this role of unbiased “sommelier” helped to engage with residents and be like a welcoming guest.
